Date & Banana Oat Porridge

Date & Banana Oat Porridge makes the perfect nutritious and filling breakfast in a bowl. It is also a great sohour idea in Ramadan.
In this recipe, old fashioned oats (not quick or instant oats), are cooked in water until a thick porridge consistency is reached. Then a splash of dairy or non-dairy milk is added (I prefer almond milk), together with your choice of fruit, and a sweetener, such as, a drizzle of honey. A pinch of cinnamon or some nuts also make a great addition.
Unlike porridge that is cooked in milk, this porridge does not stick to the pot while cooking. It is also amazingly lighter yet filling and delicious. According to the original porridge recipe by Jamie Oliver, we used his recommended oats to water ratio as 1:3.
If you use quick oats, keep the ratio 1:2 with less water.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup wholegrain oats - شوفان الحبوب الكاملة
- 1.5 cup water - ماء
- 6 small dried dates (chopped) - تمر
- 1 drizzle honey - عسل
- 1 medium banana - موز
- 1 teaspoon sesame seeds (toasted) - بذور السمسم
Step by step
- Place oats and water in a small pot on medium heat. Stir frequently using a wooden spoon until your reach a thick porridge consistency (about 5 minutes.)
- Add chopped dates and stir for another minute on low heat, then add a splash of milk and stir.
- Divide porridge over two bowls. Top with banana slices, a drizzle of honey and toasted sesame seeds.
