Futsal: Road to Glory. The news came out of nowhere early in the morning, in April 2010. “ According to Le Parisien, futsal international player Wissam Ben Yedder is about to join Toulouse FC .” Ben Yedder has lived a hundred lives. He learnt football in the streets of his home neighbourhood, la Cité-Perdue, in Garges-lès-Gonesse, before playing futsal for no less than seven years and at international level. Only later did he make a name in association football: first with Toulouse, then with Sevilla, and now with Monaco. He has also become a Les Bleus regular. All those who know him well agree on one point though: his skills as a footballer come from the streets and futsal. Both made him an “instinctive go-getter.” Far from the spotlights and TV cameras, futsal keeps growing, so much that it has welcome legions of players frustrated by association football. A few years ago, Kamel Hamdoud, who played for Omonia Nicosia (with whom he featured in Europa League) before choosing futsal (and becoming a futsal international player), said: “ I did not enjoy playing football anymore. There was no tactics at all, players used to just kick the ball around. ” Mourad Meghni, an Algeria international player hailed as the “New Zidane” in the early years of his career, switched to futsal when he turned 30 too. He agrees on the non-strategic aspect of association football and adds: “ People don’t realize how tactical futsal is .” It seems funny, as some of the best players in the world come from futsal. Neymar, Hazard, Iniesta, Salah: Made in Futsal. Take Neymar for instance. When he was 5 years old, he joined the futsal section of Gremetal, a club founded by the metallurgists’ trade unions in Santos. A few years ago, he said in a FourFourTwo interview: “ Futsal had a great influence on me when I was younger. It is exhausting, it helps you improve your skills, your speed and accuracy, as well as your ability to get out of small spaces .” The PSG superstar started association football at the age of 11, but still shows futsal habits today. “ In futsal, you must think faster, move faster. If you waste a single second, you lose the ball. It’s as simple as that .” But the most striking futsal feature of his game is his ball control, which he does with the sole of his shoe. It is no surprise as futsal is like a religion in Brazil and Portugal. This is why players like Wissam Ben Yedder, Neymar and Coutinho have such a flexible ankle: it is as crucial as dribbling in futsal. Many players have learnt football indoor. It is the case for Xavi, Iniesta, Eden Hazard, Ronaldinho, Marcelo, and even Mohamed Salah, who scored a myriad of goals in futsal years before shaking the Premier League defenses with Liverpool. Egypt, the 2020 Africa Futsal Cup of Nations favourite. Born in Uruguay in the 1930s, “Futebol de Salão” (its Brazilian name) has become a lab where players practice their skills and learn how to use spaces. It is a faster, simplified and condensed version of association football, a football which requires “ agility to play forwards ” as explained by Hulk on the FIFA website. But there is more: a year ago, the administrative court of Paris ruled in favour of Garges Djibson, a French futsal club, and acknowledged them as the “youth academy” where Wissam Ben Yedder started his career. It was a historical moment, as it showed that times are changing and that futsal is now seen differently. It is seen as a spectacular version of football, a show played in front of a stand that looks like a Roman amphitheatre. This is the type of atmosphere we might feel from 28 January to 4 February in Laâyoune, Morocco. In South Africa, Morocco won the 2016 TOTAL African Futsal Cup of Nations. Now they are hosting the sixth edition. Again, Egypt is seen as the favourite, as they won the competition three times and were runners-up twice. The 2020 TOTAL African Futsal Cup of Nations is important as it acts as qualifiers for the World Cup taking place in Lithuania, next autumn. This tournament is not only a springboard, it is also a reason to watch a wonderful sport which has been forgotten for too long. Because let’s be honest: nothing compares to the beauty of a drag-back.
